ESG Initiative for long-term sustainability – Local Farmers Cultivate a Fresh Future with Supplied Seeds
In an inspiring show of collaboration, local community farmers near our Kenmare, Mozambique site have benefited from a seed distribution project Among the crops now thriving are leeks and zucchinis, along with a variety of other seasonal vegetables.
The seed distribution project, launched earlier this year, aimed to strengthen local food security and encourage small-scale producers to diversify their harvests. By supplying growers with carefully selected seed packs, the program gave them the tools to experiment with new crops and boost local supply chains.
The initiative underscores the value of investing in local agriculture – keeping food miles low, supporting livelihoods, and ensuring families have access to nutritious produce.
Lettuce seeds have already proven to be successful, farmers harvested within two months, and some left plots for seed generation to ensure ongoing planting.
This initiative was carried out with the Kenmare Moma Development Association (KMAD), a non-profit organisation supporting local community development. It was a small-scale pilot to show farmers what’s possible and to demonstrate IFS’s commitment to collaboration and community engagement. A larger-scale rollout is being considered in the future.
